This episode find its root in the city of Kanpur (UP), when a school boy named Shankar Tripathi student of class 11 was one day coming from Physics coaching class from Barra to Ratan lal nagar and he found a girl whose cycle chain was derailed and she was trying hard to fix it, Shankar stopped and offered help and successfully fixed the issue and girl left the place after returning a polite thank you. Days went on, shankar was all busy with the routine work when one day he saw a familiar face on a “Gol Gappa” shop which he shortly identified as the girl he helped with chain fixing.

Sonam got agreed to this and they reached the local famous samosa shop, shankar was very happy till he heard a roaring voice from behind “SONAM what are you doing here??” Sonam’s face got paled he was her father. यह प्रकरण कानपुर (उत्तर प्रदेश) का है, जब एक स्कूल के लड़के 11 class के शंकर त्रिपाठी छात्र नामित एक दिन बर्रा से भौतिकी कोचिंग क्लास से रतन लाल नगर के लिए आ रहा था | वह एक लड़की जिसकी साइकिल की चैन उतर गयी थी. यह देख कर शंकर इसे ठीक करने के लिए पूछता है और वह उस साईकिल को ठीक भी कर देता है | वह लड़की एक विनम्र धन्यवाद कह कर वह से चले जाते है | कुछ दिन यूँ ही गुजरते हैं, और जब शंकर एक दिन “गोल गप्पे” दुकान पर रुकता है और देखता है की की जिस लड़की की साईकिल उसने ठीक की थी वह गोल गप्पे खा रही थी | शंकर की जब नज़र उस लड़की से मिलती है तो वह हडबडाहट में दुकानदार से साईकिल ठीक वाले का पता पूछता है जिस पर दुकानदार शंकर को घूरने लगत है, इस से घबरा कर शंकर वहां से भागने लगता है | लेकिन उसे उस लड़की की तेज़ हँसी सुन जाती है|
कुछ दिनों के बाद शंकर रतन लाल नगर स्थित एक किताब की दूकान से कुछ खरीद रहा होता है के तभी उसको वोही लड़की दुकान के अन्दर दिखाई देती है जो की दुकान में बैठे व्यक्ति को चाय का कप पकड़ा रही होती है. शंकर वापस से पेट में गुदगुदी का अनुभव करता है जो उसे हर बार उस लड़की को देख के होती थी, उसने जल्दी से पैसे दिए और बहार आ कर दूकान का नाम पढ़ा जो “सोनम स्टेशनर्स एंड बुक मार्ट” था. अब शंकर ने आमतौर पर उस दूकान पर जाना प्रारंभ कर दिया और अधिकतर वो उस समय जाया करता था जब वह लड़की दुकान पर अकेले होती थी, धीरे धीरे उसने लड़की से बातचीत का सिलसिला शुरू कर दिया और एक दिन उसने लड़की को अकेला पा कर पूछ ही लिया के “आपका नाम क्या है?” लड़की ने बिना जवाब दिए दुकान के बोर्ड की तरफ इशारा कर दिया जिस पर सोनम स्टेशनर्स लिखा था.
कुछ और दिनों में शंकर की सोनम से और अधिक बात होने लगी और 31 दिसम्बर 2005 की शाम को शंकर ने सोनम से कहा के मैं तुम्हे न्यू इयर 2006 की पार्टी देना चाहता हूँ तो क्या तुम मेरे साथ पास की दुकान में समोसे खाने चलोगी? सोनम इस बात पर राज़ी हो गयी और वो लोग पास की समोसे की दूकान पर पहुँच गए, शंकर अब बहुत ख़ुशी महसूस कर रहा था की तभी उसने पीछे से एक तेज़ आवाज़ सुनी “सोनम तुम यहाँ क्या कर रही हो ?” सोनम का चेहरा सफ़ेद हो गया यह कोई और नहीं सोनम के पिता जी थे, वो आवाज़ दुबारा गरजी और कहा के तुमने घर में किसे बताया है यहाँ आने से पहले ?तभी शंकर की ओर इशारा करते हुए पूछा और यह लड़का कौन है ? अब सोनम बहुत ज्यादा घबरा चुकी थी और उसने धीमे आवाज़ में कहा के “सॉरी पापा, मैं इस लड़के को नहीं जानती, यह तो मुझसे पैसे मांग रहा था तो मैंने इसे पैसे ना दे कर समोसा खिला दिया” सोनम के इस जवाब से शंकर स्तब्ध था सोनम के पिता जी ने शंकर को देखा जिसने नीली रबड़ की चप्पल, हाथ से बुना हुआ हरे रंग का हाफ स्वेटर और ब्राउन रंग का पेंट पहना था जिसके बाएँ घुटने पर रफू का निशान था, शंकर एक गरीब परिवार से आता था और सोनम को दिल से पसंद करता था. सोनम के पिता ने अपनी जेब से 10 का नोट निकाल के शंकर की तरफ फैंका और भद्दी गाली देते हुए कहा के “काम किया कर साले, मांगने आ जाते है चल भाग यहाँ से” इतना कह कर वो सोनम का हाथ पकड़ कर उसे वहां से ले गए. वहां मौजूद सभी लोग शंकर पर हंस रहे थे और उसका मज़ाक उड़ा रहे थे, वो वहां अब व्यंग का पात्र हो गया था, बिना एक भी शब्द कहे शंकर ने वो 10 का नोट उठाया और चलने लगा, उसके आंसू निरंतर बह रहे थे, उसने उसी 10rs के नोट पर लिख दिया के “सोनम गुप्ता बेवफा है”.
